With those alarming statistics on your radar, try these tips for healthy eating at your next holiday gathering.

Enjoy a Snack Before. You may be tempted to skip breakfast or lunch so you can splurge on dinner and desserts, but do not fall victim to this bad habit. By skipping meals, you may cause yourself to over eat and consume even more calories than you would have if you had snacked beforehand.

Offer to Bring a Healthy Dish. If you are not hosting, this strategy provides you with a guaranteed healthful option and your host will greatly appreciate the help.

Avoid Excess Calories. Save your calories for the main meal. Sit more than an arm’s reach away from snack bowls and trays. Enjoy sparkling water with lime and start mingling!

Serve Small Portions and Balance Your Plate. Remember to make your plate resemble the MyPlate figure. Your beloved holiday dish may not be the healthiest, but any food can fit into a healthy diet when you practice portion control and plan ahead.
